Members’ persistent curiosity about learning how to make tamales eventually led to requests for a cooking lesson. After some convincing, I was able to get my mother, Elizenda, and sister, Yessica, to agree to teach tamale-making at the Clubhouse. On November 22nd, the Clubhouse hosted its first tamale-making social event! Thirteen members attended. While some were excited to get hands-on, others preferred to watch the process. Typically, making a large quantity of tamales takes about five hours or more, but with many members actively participating, the process took around four hours. We made three types of tamales: red mole sauce, green salsa, and rajas with cheese. Each member received one of each, plus an additional tamale of their choice. We hope to make this a yearly social event!
